Her Last Death: A Memoir by Susanna Sonnenberg pg 1-40

Summary:

The story starts with a phone ringing early in the morning in the Montana housing. In this estate, Susanna Sonnenberg, the narrator, lives with her husband, Christopher and her two sons, a two year old, and a six year old, Daniel. Every night, they read books to each of the boys. They cross back and forth between the boys beds with kisses and patient hugs for their stuffed animals. Susanna's aunt calls to let her know that her mother is in the emergency room, under sugery all night due to a car accident. She is now in a coma, and she might not live. Any daughter that heard that their mother is in a coma would rush a thousand miles, to be with them by their bedside. Susanna is shock and speechless, and unfortunetly, she can't bring herself to go see her mother in the hospital. Her courageous memoir can only explain why.

Quote:

"I'ved lived apart from my mother since I left for bording school at fourteen" (Sonnenberg, 4)

Reaction:

During class, we talk about the "the coming of age", and a child maturing to became an adult. This quote perfectly signifies the adolescent time period of susanne. She goes off and lives on her own at the age of fourteen. Meaning she will be more accountable for her actions. She will be less dependent of her mother and more dependent of herserlf. Once, Susanne got pregnant at a young age of nineteen, her responsibility increased. She is not only taking care of herself anymore. She brought a new life into the world; a life she needs to care for also.
